Research translation doesn’t fail because researchers don’t care about impact. It fails because partnering and real-world use aren’t being designed together upstream. In this essay, we share a workshop moment that revealed a common blind spot—many faculty equate translation with dissemination—and introduce the Partnering–Utilization Gap: when collaboration feels strong, but outputs still don’t travel into practice, policy, or products. We unpack five structural bottlenecks that keep the gap in place and offer simple reflection questions for faculty, research leaders, and funders who want research to become usable—not just publishable.
